Black History Month

Aloha ‘Ohana - as we start celebrating Black History Month here is a quick question for all of you:

Did you know why did Martin Luther King Jr. wear a Hawaiian lei during the Selma to Montgomery marches?

Answer: Dr. King saw Hawaii as a “noble example” of racial harmony.

During the third and final Selma to Montgomery march that began on March 21, 1965, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights protesters were seen leading the crowd of thousands wearing a Hawaiian lei as a symbol of affection, and more generally as a gesture of love. The garlands were organized to be sent to Dr. King as a symbolic action of support and solidarity by Reverend Abraham Akaka, clergyman, and Kahu of Kawaiahaʻo Church.

In honor of Dr. King and in celebration of Black History Month let’s all stand together to support one another.

Compassion

Happy Monday ‘Ohana!

We love this graphic! Its meaning sits very close to one of our core principles here at Ko’olauloa Health Center - compassion.

Many of us stop at Empathy when we try to support others through difficulties.

While Empathy allows us to authentically feel with the sufferer, it can sometimes reduce our ability to help, as we become immersed in their emotions.

To be an effective supporter, it's sometimes better to take a step back from the debilitating emotions and transition into Compassion, where we can take effective actions to help.

Have a beautiful week!

Making a Difference

Aloha ‘Ohana - while sometimes life can get challenging, please remember that together we _are_ making a difference.

All of us at Ko’olauloa Health Center want to express our heartfelt concern for everyone who continues to be impacted by the challenges we have been facing as a family and community. This pandemic has shown us how quickly our lives can change and how fragile our health can be and reminds us how important our friends, family, and the Ko’olauloa community is to all of us.

Each day, we are overwhelmed by the support you give to our staff and our health programs. Let's continue to work together and make a difference.

Heros

Aloha ‘Ohana,

As Maya Angelou said, “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!”

Today we would like to celebrate and say thank you to all the essential workers - heath care professionals, grocery clerks, bus drivers, mail carriers, police officers, firefighters, delivery drivers, bank cashiers, farmers, sanitation workers, and others - who put their lives on the line for us.

You are our heroes and she-roes!

We see you and support you…

Why We Wear Masks

Aloha ‘Ohana, Here are three reasons why we wear our masks in public.

  1. Humility: we don’t know if we have COVID-19 as it is clear that people can spread the disease before they have symptoms.

  2. Kindness: We don’t know if the person we are near has a child battling cancer, or cares for their elderly mother. While we might be fine, they are not. 3

  3. Community: We want our community to thrive, businesses to stay open, employees to stay healthy. Keeping a lid on COVID-19 helps us all.

Have a beautiful weekend!

Symptoms

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Here is a great message from our friends at the Hawaii State Department of Health.

Those of you who may have contracted COVID-19 may not experience symptoms. However, you can still spread the virus to those you love around you. If you have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, quarantine to protect your loved ones and those at high risk.

If you haven’t gotten your vaccine, to get your booster, or to get tested, please make your vaccination appointment with our team by calling (808) 293-9231.

Scrolling

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Here is an important health tip from our staff. As you know we live in an era of constant phone checking. Scrolling through Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, playing with filters on Snapchat, and checking Twitter are things some people do for hours on end.

According to data recently released by the analytics firm Flurry, the average American spends up to 5 hours a day on their phone. That’s 35 hours a week and 140 hours a month that we are wasting on our phones!

The truth is, cell phones run people’s lives. We need to look up from our phones and take in the world around us. There’s so much to do and see instead of staring at your cell phone.

Here are a few things you can do instead of scrolling:

  • Take a walk

  • Take a yoga class

  • Visit a farmer’s market

  • Go for a bike ride

  • Go to the gym

  • Make a bucket list

  • Take a nap

  • Meditate

  • Play with your dog

  • Write in a journal

  • Listen to music

  • Hang out with friends/family

  • Get your COVID booster

Aloha Spirit

Aloha Spirit on 2022’s first Aloha Friday…

Our staff at Ko’olauloa believes that Aloha Spirit is the coordination of the minds and hearts within each of us. It brings each person to the self. It allows each person to think and emote good feelings to others.

In the contemplation and presence of the life force, "Aloha", the following unuhi laulā loa may be thought of in this way:

"Akahai", meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness;

"Lōkahi", meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony;

Oluʻolu" meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness;

"Haʻahaʻa", meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty;

"Ahonui", meaning patience, is to be expressed with perseverance.

All of us at KHC believe these are traits of character that express the charm, warmth, and sincerity of our community. Have a beautiful and healthy weekend everyone!

Step into '22

Aloha ‘Ohana - as we step into 2022, you may want to make an appointment with our in-house board-qualified podiatrist/foot & ankle surgeon, Dr. Day.

Why you should see Dr. Day? It’s important to get your feet checked even if you have healthy feet. A simple and quick appointment can help prevent foot, toe, and nail problems. You can also learn from Dr. Day what to look out for and what shoes and insoles are best for your feet.

Call (808) 293-9231 to make your appointment today. Mahalo!

One in Five

Aloha ‘Ohana!

As we start 2022 we would like to help protect your keiki, your family, and our community. Getting a COVID-19 vaccine can help protect children ages 5 years and older from getting COVID-19.

  • Vaccinating children can help protect family members, including siblings who are not eligible for vaccination and family members who may be at increased risk of getting very sick if they are infected.

  • Vaccination can also help keep children from getting seriously sick even if they do get COVID-19.

  • Vaccinating children ages 5 years and older can help keep them in school and help them safely participate in sports, playdates, and other group activities.

  • Help us protect your whole family and slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community by getting yourself and your children ages 5 years and older vaccinated against COVID-19.

Call (808) 293-9231 to make your vaccination appointment today.
