Nurse Practitioner Week

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Did you know that this week is National Nurse Practitioner Week?

Nurse Practitioner Week takes place annually in the second week of November to recognize these incredible healthcare providers and raise awareness of the powerful role they play in ensuring general health and well-being.

Can you believe that the nurse practitioner profession has been in existence for 56 years now? Nurse practitioners are highly educated and trained medical professionals who are almost like doctors. In addition to their fundamental roles as registered nurses, they can provide primary care, counseling, and diagnosis, offer health education and write prescriptions.

Let's celebrate all of our Ko’olauloa nurse practitioners this week together! Mahalo!

Positive Things to say to Kids

Aloha ‘Ohana - we hope everyone is safe on this rainy Monday. While we were getting ready for the week and the new year, we were thinking of our community’s keiki and how we can continue to be a positive influence.

Going back to basics - Words Matter…

Certainly, words can become meaningless when they aren’t followed with action, but nonetheless, words have great power. You can choose to add more positive ones to your days.

What phrases do you say each day to your children?

Which ones do you want them to remember?

What do you say that will stay with your children for the rest of their lives?

Coming up with a few encouraging words for kids or positive phrases to say may tip the scales toward the kindness you want your keiki to imitate.

Here is an abbreviated list of things to say to your children that may inspire you*

- You are loved

- You make me smile

- I think about you when we’re apart

- My world is better with you in it

- I will do my best to keep you safe

- Sometimes I will say no

- I have faith in you

- I know you can handle it

- You are creative

- Trust your instincts

- Your ideas are worthwhile

- You are capable

- You are deserving

- You are strong

The complete list will appear in the News section of our new website which will be launching very soon!

Mindfulness

Aloha Ohana! It’s Mindful Monday here at KHC.

Let’s be honest - as beneficial as mindfulness is, tuning in to your surroundings, surrendering to the moment, and embracing whatever thoughts pop up aren’t always as easy as it sounds. It takes effort—but with continued practice, mindfulness can make a big difference in your day-to-day life.

Here are a few quotes on mindfulness to inspire you to live in the present this coming week.

“Mindfulness isn’t difficult. We just have to remember to do it.” – Sharon Salzberg

“You can’t stop the waves but you can learn how to surf” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

“When you’re feeling frazzled, put all of your attention on the breath. It’s a portal into the present moment, the best remedy for stress.” — Ellen Barrett

“Mindfulness clears the windshield of the mind so that we can see things as they really are.” — Travis Eliot

Have a great week everyone!

National Diabetes Month 2022

Aloha ‘Ohana!

November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country team up to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on managing diabetes by building your healthcare team.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. It affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth. Diabetes can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and is linked to some types of cancer.

Working with healthcare professionals at Ko’olauloa Health Center can offer you the personal care you need and may help improve your health. And while it takes a team to manage diabetes, remember that you are the most important participant in your diabetes care.

Here are some tips to help you manage diabetes and build your healthcare team:

- You are the center of your care.
- Manage diabetes as early as possible.
- Build your diabetes healthcare team with Ko’olauloa Health Center.
- Start with small changes to create healthy habits.
- Make physical activity and healthy eating part of your daily routine.

Feel free to contact our providers by calling (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to schedule an appointment. Let's work together this month to get healthy.

Pharmacy Services

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Our friendly pharmacy team is ready to serve customers looking for a convenient alternative to Foodland Laie’s closed pharmacy. Even if you are not a patient with us, you are still able to fill prescriptions at Ko’olauloa Health Center.

Unlike most retail pharmacies, Ko’olauloa Health Center makes medications affordable with a sliding scale for uninsured patients.

Ko’olauloa Health Center’s free consultation services by our friendly pharmacist include medication reconciliation -- discussing each individual medication, what it is used for (indication), instructions for administration, how it works within the body, anticipated side effects, and most importantly, possible interactions with other medications you might already be taking.

Ko’olauloa Pharmacy also offers their patients: shorter wait times for medications; one-stop convenience with the pharmacy co-located at Ko’olauloa Health Center’s Kahuku Clinic right next to the hospital; complimentary pill organizers and pill cutters; and of course personalized friendly service because at KHC you’re ‘ohana.

Ko’olauloa Health Center’s providers and pharmacists work as a team to keep you and your family well! If you live in Laie or Kahuku, come fill your next prescription with one of Ko’olauloa Health Center’s providers.

Job Burnout

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that job burnout can have serious consequences for your health? Here are a few important consequences of job burnout from our friends at the American Heart Association.

Experts say the first step to dealing with burnout is to prevent it by doing all the things we know already are good for us: getting good sleep, exercising, eating healthy, drinking water, and having interests outside of work.

But if you can’t prevent it, don’t just try to tough it out. Seek help from professional therapists or a faith community and look for positive coping strategies like delegating tasks, taking short walks during the day, or periodic breathing exercises.

If you’d like to learn more about how to cope with job burnout or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to set up an appointment.

Mahalo!
