KHC Dental

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Meet Dr. Cecilia! Did you know that poor childhood access to dental care led to serious problems for KHC's dentist, Cecilia Serrato, DMD. Fixing her mouth had such a positive impact on her life, that she was inspired to become a dentist and help others.

Dr. Serrato's goal is caring for both pediatric and adult patients and preventing unnecessary dental pain.

Call 293-9231 to schedule a cleaning and get to know her.

1st Year 1st Tooth

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that the American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1?

The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating, and other medical issues. Youngsters with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly, and smile with confidence.

The American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1 – or as soon as the first tooth appears. This “well-baby visit” teaches parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth and help them remain cavity-free.

Keiki Dental

Aloha ‘Ohana!

On this last day of National Children’s Dental Health Month our staff thought it would be the perfect time get our keiki to brush up on the best ways to keep their smiles nice and bright!
Tips for Maintaining Your Child’s Oral Health

Our dental staff takes pride in serving KHC patients in such vital years of early childhood. They recommend the following oral health tips to start your little ones on their journey to a lifetime of healthy smiles.

- Schedule routine check-ups. If it’s been more than six months since your child has seen a dentist, schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

- Clean your baby’s gums daily. Until those teeth come in gently wipe a damp washcloth over the gums to clear away harmful bacteria after each feeding.

- Start brushing with the first tooth. Begin brushing your baby’s teeth when you see one coming in with an infant toothbrush. Use water and a tiny bit of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).

- Brush twice each day for two minutes. Children ages 2-6 should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise kids younger than six years old while brushing, as they are more likely to swallow toothpaste.

- Begin flossing. Once your child’s teeth touch, you can start flossing in between them.

- Snack healthy! Fruit juice, sports drinks, fruit snacks, and sticky candies all pose serious threats to your child’s teeth. Give kids calcium-rich snacks like cheese or low-sugar yogurt. If you have to resort to candy – a chocolate bar is preferable to gummy or sticky sweets that can get lodged in between the teeth, even after brushing.

- Keep them hydrated! Avoid sugary drinks and stick to good old-fashioned water. Water helps to rinse away any sugar or particles that can lead to cavities. Many municipal water sources also contain fluoride, which is recommended by the American Dental Association and U.S. Surgeons General, among others, as an efficient way to prevent tooth decay. In fact, the theme of this year’s National Children’s Dental Health Month is celebrating 75 years of water fluoridation.

- Replace your child’s toothbrush every three to four months.

Don’t Rush When You Brush

Don’t Rush When You Brush

Aloha ‘Ohana!

As you know February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Sometimes our keiki’s dental health and hygiene is neglected, and treatment is sought only after it reaches a stage, where medicines or changes in brushing techniques or other minimal procedures are ineffective.

It is essential for parents to pay attention to the oral health of their keiki as it is imperative that some teeth are formed in-utero (i.e., in the wombs of the mothers). Food, brushing techniques, and other habits determine the oral environments of the children, as they grow up.

There are certain oral hygiene habits that should be kept in mind by the parents so that they can ensure a sound oral environment for their keiki:

- Toddlers should be empowered to understand good oral hygiene and they should be given the opportunity to know about good oral health habits.

- Parents should ensure that their keiki do not consume sweets, chocolates, or sweetened drinks, which release acids – leading to teeth decay and the formation of dental plaque, and caries (cavities).

- Children should be reinforced about oral health and hygiene by story-telling and playful methods, rather than scaring them about bad oral health.

- It is imperative that parents should always “do and show”, i.e., practice what they want their children to follow and do.

- A mandatory follow-up to the dentist, once every six months or a year, should be inculcated as adults in their futures.

- Oral health should be treated as necessary, as physical health.

If you have any questions about your keiki’s dental health, call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to make an appointment. Mahalo!

Keiki Dental Health Month

Aloha ‘Ohana

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. Here are a few recommendations from our staff will get your keiki off to a great start with good dental health.

Brush and floss twice each day

The best weapons available to a parent are a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. The ADA recommends that parents teach their children to brush for two minutes two times a day—morning and evening at bedtime. Use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and teach your child to avoid swallowing toothpaste.  Parents should provide help and supervision until a child is about seven or eight years old.

Limit sugary treats and drinks

This includes avoiding juice between meals. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends limiting juice to four to six ounces per day. Parents can also replace sugary treats with healthy snacks such as cheese, yogurt, and fruit.

Schedule a dental checkup

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents schedule their child’s first visit to the dentist when the child turns one year of age. First birthday equals first checkup.  However, if a parent detects discoloration or staining, they should schedule an appointment right away.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolaoluachc.org to schedule your appointment today.
