National Nurses Week

Aloha ‘Ohana!

This week is National Nurses Week (May 6 – May 12), and to honor these remarkably dedicated health professionals I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to them for the difference they make in all of our lives.

Nurses do so much more than tend to our physical needs. They care for our emotional ones as well by treating the whole person with compassion and a good ear. They not only see the patient's physical wounds, but they also see a human being with deeper needs.

In the world of today’s health care, that is no ordinary feat!

So the next time you’re at our Kahuku clinic reach out and say mahalo - it will mean a lot!

Essential Access Health

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Mahalo @essnaccesshlth for the kind words! We see you!

Essential Access Health’s wonderful post:

“We share Ko'olauloa's belief that health care is a right, not a privilege. We were inspired to hear how #TitleX funding supports their capacity to ensure that patients living in this rural region receive the contraceptive method that is right for them, supporting their individual and ohana health, and the piece of mind that access to essential health care brings. Mahalo to the amazing team at Ko'olauloa, you are super stars in your community!”

KHC Dental

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Meet Dr. Cecilia! Did you know that poor childhood access to dental care led to serious problems for KHC's dentist, Cecilia Serrato, DMD. Fixing her mouth had such a positive impact on her life, that she was inspired to become a dentist and help others.

Dr. Serrato's goal is caring for both pediatric and adult patients and preventing unnecessary dental pain.

Call 293-9231 to schedule a cleaning and get to know her.

1st Year 1st Tooth

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that the American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1?

The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating, and other medical issues. Youngsters with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly, and smile with confidence.

The American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1 – or as soon as the first tooth appears. This “well-baby visit” teaches parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth and help them remain cavity-free.

Your BP

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Here are a few simple points on understanding your blood pressure.

What is blood pressure?: Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps it around your body.

Understanding the numbers: Blood pressure readings consist of two numbers - systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number). Systolic measures pressure when the heart beats, while diastolic measures pressure when the heart rests between beats.

Interpreting readings: Normal blood pressure is typically around 120/80 mmHg. Readings above this may indicate hypertension (high blood pressure), while readings below may indicate hypotension (low blood pressure). It's important to understand where your readings fall.

Risk factors and lifestyle: Various factors such as diet, exercise, stress, and genetics can influence blood pressure. Understanding these factors and making appropriate lifestyle changes can help manage and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare professional are crucial.

If you have any questions about your blood pressure or heart health, give us a call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org.

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that reading aloud to babies is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control?

Reading before naps and bedtime. Read with enthusiasm while keiki snuggles on your lap. Vary the tone of your voice. Ask questions. What's going to happen next? Is the kitty happy or sad? At KHC we believe reading is so vital for wellness, we have Reach Out and Read.

We reward every keiki well visit from 6 months to 6 years old with a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries, if you don't have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us at 293-9231 for an appointment. KHC is always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Let's Breath Easy!

Aloha Ohana,

Rates of asthma among Ko'olauloa's keiki are 50% higher than the state average.

As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, let's keep in mind that asthma sufferers are especially sensitive to changes in air quality and climate.

We can all do more to be kind to the planet and each other.

KHC can help you regain control of your asthma. If you or a family member is suffering from asthma (or any other health concern), call us at 293-9231. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.
