Yearly Physicals

Aloha ‘Ohana!

When you hear the word “physical,” you may think of 'hanabata' days when you had to visit the doctor to get shots for school. But a physical is more than just shots or a physical exam. And both children AND adults can benefit from attending regular physicals.

You may feel fine, but catching problems BEFORE they become serious means: Finding a problem when it is easier to treat (such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer). Saving you money, and potentially saving your life.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org/yearly-physicals to learn more or schedule an appointment.

Love Your Heart

Aloha ‘Ohana!

When you think about February, you may think: Valentine’s Day, chocolate, love, or maybe anything that’s anti those things. But, one thing to remember this month is our HEARTS, because February is American Heart Month.

While your heart works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, how often do you think about it?  And how often do you take action to protect the health of your heart? Now’s the time to really start thinking about how you can take better care of yourself.

Heart disease and other cardiovascular issues are on the rise. Many factors can contribute to health issues, but you also have ways you can be proactive about your health. You may think it won’t happen to you, but you never know.

Being informed is important. Learn warning signs and symptoms of heart-related issues. Get in touch with your KHC provider by calling (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to schedule an appointment - especially if heart disease runs in your family. Start with small daily actions to help reduce or prevent your risk of developing heart problems.

Take care and have a healthy and happy Aloha Friday!

Keiki Dental Health Month

Aloha ‘Ohana

February is National Children's Dental Health Month. Here are a few recommendations from our staff will get your keiki off to a great start with good dental health.

Brush and floss twice each day

The best weapons available to a parent are a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. The ADA recommends that parents teach their children to brush for two minutes two times a day—morning and evening at bedtime. Use only a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and teach your child to avoid swallowing toothpaste.  Parents should provide help and supervision until a child is about seven or eight years old.

Limit sugary treats and drinks

This includes avoiding juice between meals. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends limiting juice to four to six ounces per day. Parents can also replace sugary treats with healthy snacks such as cheese, yogurt, and fruit.

Schedule a dental checkup

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that parents schedule their child’s first visit to the dentist when the child turns one year of age. First birthday equals first checkup.  However, if a parent detects discoloration or staining, they should schedule an appointment right away.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolaoluachc.org to schedule your appointment today.

Heart your Heart

Aloha ‘Ohana!

February is American Heart Month and focusing on your heart health has never been more important. Here are a few tips to work on:

- Stop smoking. It is a very difficult thing to quit, but you will reap the benefits for years to come.  Your primary care physicians are happy to assist you with this, including medications, patches, or talking through it.

- Focus on eating healthy.  Eat foods low in saturated fats and sodium and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.

- Move more.  Not getting enough physical activity puts you at higher risk for heart disease and stroke.  Try to increase your daily activity.  Pressed for time?  Try doing 10 minutes of activity, three times a day.

- Visit your primary care provider regularly to have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly and help prevent heart disease.

Make heart health a part of your self-care routine with these tips from our staff at KHC. Give us a call at (808) 293-9231 to learn more or visit www.koolauloachc.org

Reach Out & Read

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Did you know reading to children supports health and wellness?

Even though babies can’t understand everything you’re saying let alone read words, reading aloud is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control. Because it’s social time, it’s a time for you to get closer to your baby.

Try to read out loud to your baby every day; before naps and bedtime are ideal. Have them snuggle in your lap when you’re reading to them. Read with enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice. You’re not limited to the words on the page. Ask questions. What’s going to happen next? Etc.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we believe reading is so vital for wellness, that we have a program called Reach Out and Read. Each time your child comes for their visit between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, will receive a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries. If you don’t have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Concerned about your child’s reading or speaking? Let your primary care provider know. We can usually tell you if they’re on track or not, and if we have any doubts, we can refer your child to the right specialist to figure out the issue and get the needed treatment.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us today for an appointment. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Visit www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 for more information.

1st Year 1st Tooth

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that the American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1?

The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating, and other medical issues. Youngsters with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly, and smile with confidence.

The American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1 – or as soon as the first tooth appears. This “well-baby visit” teaches parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth and help them remain cavity-free.
