2022 Commitments

Aloha ‘Ohana,

As the year ends, we are starting to look towards 2022 with a renewed sense of commitment to our keiki, ‘ohana, and our community. In 2022 we will continue to keep these words in mind:

~~~
PO'OKELA (Excellence)
In 2022 we will continue to strive for excellence in our service through the commitment to quality.
LAULIMA (Teamwork)
In 2022, we will continue to believe that all of our employees, our patients, and our partners are all in our programs together.
MĀLAMA (Stewardship)
In 2022 we will continue to honor the traditions of the past and dreams of the future by caring for everyone in our community, and our fragile environment.
~~~

Mahalo for giving us the privilege of caring for each and every one of you. We are looking forward to 2022.

Mana'o Monday - Nutrition

Aloha ‘Ohana - it's Mana’o Monday here at Ko’olauloa. Here are a few dietary thoughts and tips from our staff to help your your brain healthy and kick start your week.

  • Green Veggies: Leafy greens suck as kale, spinach, collards, and broccoli are rich in brain-healthy nutrients. Research suggests these plant-based food may help slow cognitive decline.

  • Fatty Fish: Fatty fish are abundant sources of omega-3 fatty acids, healthy unsaturated fats that have been linked to lower blood levels of beta-amyloid (the protein that forms damaging clumps in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease).

  • Berries: Flavonoids, the natural plant pigments that give berries their brilliant hues, also help improve memory.

  • Tea & Coffee: Tea and coffee might offer more than just a short-term concentration boost.

  • Walnuts: Nuts are excellent sources of protein and healthy fats. Walnuts in particular might also improve memory.

And above all else, new research has found that coronavirus attacks fat tissue, so maintaining a healthy diet is important to all of us. If you would like to make an appointment with our Clinical Dietitian or to schedule your booster shot, please call (808) 293-9231 today.

Hump Day

Aloha ‘Ohana - Happy Hump Day.

Whale season ‘officially’ starts next week and runs through May 15. Although the first whale of the season is usually spotted sometimes in early October, by the week after Thanksgiving, it’s common to find whales off of Maui, Lanai, the Big Island, and sometimes around East Oahu. Have a great day out there! .

Words Matter

Aloha ‘Ohana - we hope everyone is safe on this rainy Monday. While we were getting ready for the week and the new year, we were thinking of our community’s keiki and how we can continue to be a positive influence.

Going back to basics - Words Matter…

Certainly, words can become meaningless when they aren’t followed with action, but nonetheless, words have great power. You can choose to add more positive ones to your days.

What phrases do you say each day to your children?

Which ones do you want them to remember?

What do you say that will stay with your children for the rest of their lives?

Coming up with a few encouraging words for kids or positive phrases to say may tip the scales towards the kindness you want your keiki to imitate.

Here is an abbreviated list of things to say to your children that may inspire you*

  • You are loved

  • You make me smile

  • I think about you when we’re apart

  • My world is better with you in it

  • I will do my best to keep you safe

  • Sometimes I will say no

  • I have faith in you

  • I know you can handle it

  • You are creative

  • Trust your instincts

  • Your ideas are worthwhile

  • You are capable

  • You are deserving

  • You are strong

  • The complete list will appear in the News section of our new website while will be launching very soon!

World AIDS Day '21

Aloha ‘Ohana - with everything that’s happening here at home and around the country, it’s easy to forget that today is World AIDS Day.

World AIDS Day was first observed on December 1, 1988, to bring greater awareness to HIV, as well as to commemorate those affected by the disease. Today, World AIDS Day is regarded as the longest-running disease awareness initiative of its kind in the history of public health.

We’ve come a long way since then and we believe that with focused community health programs, we can be successful in tackling the challenges we face today. Have a great week!

Boosters Approved

Aloha ‘Ohana - here is some good news for you this Monday.

CDC backs expansion of COVID boosters for all adults

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky is recommending COVID-19 vaccine boosters for all adults. The announcement came just hours after a vaccine advisory committee voted unanimously to expand Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine boosters to everyone 18 and older.

Last week Friday, the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted in support of a change to COVID-19 vaccination policy that says people 50 and older should get a booster if they had a primary immunization with an mRNA vaccine (Moderna or Pfizer) at least six months before. The recommendation also applies to people 18 and older in long-term care settings.

For people at least 18 and younger than 50, the panel supported a policy that recommends they receive a booster based on their individual risks and benefits.

If you have any questions regarding your booster, or if you haven’t gotten your COVID-19 vaccination yet, please call our friendly staff at (808) 293-9231 to set up an appointment today.
