Here is a great PSA: 73 public schools will serve meals free of charge over the summer to children ages 18 and younger – regardless of public school enrollment status – through its summer food service program.
The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) announced on June 3rd that 73 public schools will serve meals free of charge over the summer to children ages 18 and younger – regardless of public school enrollment status – through its summer food service program.
Beginning June 10, the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) program will serve meals at select schools Monday through Friday, excluding state-observed holidays on June 11 (King Kamehameha Day) and July 4 (Independence Day). Breakfasts will be served from 7:15 to 8:45 a.m. and lunches from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. SSO is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer.
“Consistent nutrition is vital to growing children during the summer break when they may not be in school to receive meals,” said Superintendent Keith Hayashi. “We encourage all of our families to make these free meals part of their children’s summer schedules to maintain their healthy development. We are grateful to our participating schools and dedicated cafeteria staff for giving all keiki the opportunity to receive balanced, nutritious meals.”
Summer meals are offered for on-campus dining only; there is no grab-and-go option. Children do not have to be enrolled at a participating school to be served, and meals will consist of solid foods.
Please call Harry Wa’a if you have any questions or need more information. Harry’s direct number is (808) 792-3843. You can also call (808) 293-9231 if Harry is not available.
Mahalo and have a great summer break.

Join us in welcoming Kelly Miyashiro to the KHC Team.
Kelly was born and raised on O‘ahu. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawai‘i Manoa, she moved to Washington State and began a 17-year career in emergency medical services (EMS) with American Medical Response (AMR).
Kelly attended the Physician Assistant program at the University of Washington - MEDEX Northwest and graduated with a Master of Clinical Health Services. She returned home to O‘ahu to be physically closer to her family and to fulfill her kuleana by giving back and helping the people of Hawai‘i. Kelly has joined the provider team at Ko‘olauloa Health Center, splitting her time between the Hau‘ula and Kahuku clinics seeing patients of all ages.
Welcome aboard Kelly!

When you hear the word “physical,” you may think of ‘hanabata’ days when you had to visit the doctor to get shots for school. But a physical is more than just shots or a physical exam. And both children AND adults can benefit from attending regular physicals.
You may feel fine, but catching problems BEFORE they become serious means: Finding a problem when it is easier to treat (such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer). Saving you money, and potentially saving your life.
Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org/yearly-physicals to learn more or schedule an appointment.

June is National Men’s Health Month, a time to remind men of the health issues they face and what they can do to take charge of their health.
Men are significantly less likely than women to see a doctor or report symptoms to a health care provider. Only 60 percent of men go to the doctor for a yearly, routine check up, and 40 percent won’t go until something is seriously wrong.
Despite these statistics, 20 percent of men report seeing a doctor so their significant other or a loved one will stop nagging them.
Here are a few other important facts about men’s health to know:
The overall mortality rate is 41 percent higher for men than women, and it’s higher for men for 8 out of 10 leading causes of death—including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.
31 percent of men suffer depression in their lifetime and 9 percent of men have daily feelings of depression or anxiety. But only 1/4 talk to a mental health professional, and only 1/3 take medication. Pay attention to signs of depression and don’t be afraid to seek help.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States. A man is 2 to 3 times more likely to get prostate cancer if his father, brother or son had it. Talk to your doctor about having PSA and DRE levels checked.
Encourage the men in your life to see a doctor. Call (808) 293-9231 to make an appointment for a loved one. You can make a positive impact.
