Summer Skin Care

Aloha ‘Ohana!

With summer, beach days, and picnics in full-swing, it's time to take care of our skin. Make sure you reach out to your doctor if you notice changes in your skin such as a new growth, a sore that doesn’t heal, a change in a mole, or any of the ABCDEs of melanoma (as seen in the illustration above).

If you have any questions about how to take care of your family’s skin this summer call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to schedule an appointment. We look forward to seeing you at the beach!

Happy Meals

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Here is a great PSA: 73 public schools will serve meals free of charge over the summer to children ages 18 and younger – regardless of public school enrollment status – through its summer food service program.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education (HIDOE) announced on June 3rd that 73 public schools will serve meals free of charge over the summer to children ages 18 and younger – regardless of public school enrollment status – through its summer food service program.

Beginning June 10, the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) program will serve meals at select schools Monday through Friday, excluding state-observed holidays on June 11 (King Kamehameha Day) and July 4 (Independence Day). Breakfasts will be served from 7:15 to 8:45 a.m. and lunches from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon. SSO is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and was established to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer.

“Consistent nutrition is vital to growing children during the summer break when they may not be in school to receive meals,” said Superintendent Keith Hayashi. “We encourage all of our families to make these free meals part of their children’s summer schedules to maintain their healthy development. We are grateful to our participating schools and dedicated cafeteria staff for giving all keiki the opportunity to receive balanced, nutritious meals.”

Summer meals are offered for on-campus dining only; there is no grab-and-go option. Children do not have to be enrolled at a participating school to be served, and meals will consist of solid foods.

Please call Harry Wa’a if you have any questions or need more information. Harry’s direct number is (808) 792-3843. You can also call (808) 293-9231 if Harry is not available.

Mahalo and have a great summer break.

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Now that we’re half way through the summer we thought it was a good time to highlight a few thoughts on staying health this summer.

All of us at KHC believe that summer is a great time to start new healthy habits. Especially for the over 40% of our keiki who struggle with weight and nutrition.

Here are 5 simple habits to try:

Fill 50% of you plate with fruits and veggies.

Eat at least one meal a day with your family

Set limits screen time for the whole family and no TV while eating!

One hour of FUN exercise a day

  • Encourage kids to do activities they love most.

  • Family fitness works! Be a role model and get moving with your keiki.

  • Go swimming, surfing or just walk on the beach.
    Ditch sugary drinks

  • Serve water or low fat milk at meals.

  • Don't keep sweetened drinks around the house.

  • Water is best during and after exercise.

  • Avoid sports drinks except for high intensity endurance sports.

DOH Announcement

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Here is an important PSA from Hawaii State Department of Health. The @hawaiiDOH has confirmed one travel-related dengue virus case on O'ahu. The individual traveled to a region where dengue is known to be spread.

Symptoms of dengue can range from mild to severe and include fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, and body aches.

Symptoms typically last two to seven days and although severe and even life-threatening illness can occur, most people recover after about a week. If you have traveled recently to any area where dengue is common and are experiencing these symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.

Be Respectful

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Though mask mandates have been lifted in Hawaii for a long time now, please be respectful of the choices of others.

While you may be comfortable going maskless, you can never assume the intentions of others. They may be immunocompromised, have kupuna living at home, or maybe they're just more comfortable wearing a mask out in public.

Keiki Reading

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Did you know reading to children supports health and wellness?

Even though babies can’t understand everything you’re saying let alone read words, reading aloud is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control. Because it’s social time, it’s a time for you to get closer to your baby.

Try to read out loud to your baby every day; before naps and bedtime are ideal. Have them snuggle in your lap when you’re reading to them. Read with enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice. You’re not limited to the words on the page. Ask questions. What’s going to happen next? Etc.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we believe reading is so vital for wellness, that we have a program called Reach Out and Read. Each time your child comes for their visit between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, will receive a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries. If you don’t have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Concerned about your child’s reading or speaking? Let your primary care provider know. We can usually tell you if they’re on track or not, and if we have any doubts, we can refer your child to the right specialist to figure out the issue and get the needed treatment.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us today for an appointment. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Visit www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 for more information.

Meet Dr. Cecilia

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Meet Dr. Cecilia! Did you know that poor childhood access to dental care led to serious problems for KHC’s dentist, Cecilia Serrato, DMD. Fixing her mouth had such a positive impact on her life, that she was inspired to become a dentist and help others.

Dr. Serrato’s goal is caring for both pediatric and adult patients and preventing unnecessary dental pain.

Call 293-9231 to schedule a cleaning and get to know her.
