June is Men's Health Month

Aloha ‘Ohana!

June is National Men’s Health Month, a time to remind men of the health issues they face and what they can do to take charge of their health.

Men are significantly less likely than women to see a doctor or report symptoms to a health care provider. Only 60 percent of men go to the doctor for a yearly, routine check up, and 40 percent won’t go until something is seriously wrong.

Despite these statistics, 20 percent of men report seeing a doctor so their significant other or a loved one will stop nagging them.

Here are a few other important facts about men’s health to know:

  • The overall mortality rate is 41 percent higher for men than women, and it’s higher for men for 8 out of 10 leading causes of death—including heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.

  • 31 percent of men suffer depression in their lifetime and 9 percent of men have daily feelings of depression or anxiety. But only 1/4 talk to a mental health professional, and only 1/3 take medication. Pay attention to signs of depression and don’t be afraid to seek help.

  • Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States. A man is 2 to 3 times more likely to get prostate cancer if his father, brother or son had it. Talk to your doctor about having PSA and DRE levels checked.

Encourage the men in your life to see a doctor. Call (808) 293-9231 to make an appointment for a loved one. You can make a positive impact.

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that over 1,000 women in Hawaii are diagnosed with breast cancer annually? It is the second most deadly cancer for women after lung cancer. Death rates are highest for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders. Early detection and treatment are key.

Know the warning signs:

- New lump in your breast or armpit
- Any swelling or thickening of your breast
- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
- Redness or flaky skin on your breast
- Pain or pulling in of your nipple
- Nipple discharge (other than milk!)
- Change in size or shape of your breast
- Pain in any part of your breast

Self-checks and getting to a doctor right away can save your life.

Call us at 293-9231 for an appointment.

Reach Out & Read

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Did you know reading to children supports health and wellness?

Even though babies can’t understand everything you’re saying let alone read words, reading aloud is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control. Because it’s social time, it’s a time for you to get closer to your baby.

Try to read out loud to your baby every day; before naps and bedtime are ideal. Have them snuggle in your lap when you’re reading to them. Read with enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice. You’re not limited to the words on the page. Ask questions. What’s going to happen next? Etc.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we believe reading is so vital for wellness, that we have a program called Reach Out and Read. Each time your child comes for their visit between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, will receive a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries. If you don’t have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Concerned about your child’s reading or speaking? Let your primary care provider know. We can usually tell you if they’re on track or not, and if we have any doubts, we can refer your child to the right specialist to figure out the issue and get the needed treatment.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us today for an appointment. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Visit www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 for more information.

National Nurses Week

Aloha ‘Ohana!

This week is National Nurses Week (May 6 – May 12), and to honor these remarkably dedicated health professionals I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to them for the difference they make in all of our lives.

Nurses do so much more than tend to our physical needs. They care for our emotional ones as well by treating the whole person with compassion and a good ear. They not only see the patient's physical wounds, but they also see a human being with deeper needs.

In the world of today’s health care, that is no ordinary feat!

So the next time you’re at our Kahuku clinic reach out and say mahalo - it will mean a lot!

Essential Access Health

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Mahalo @essnaccesshlth for the kind words! We see you!

Essential Access Health’s wonderful post:

“We share Ko'olauloa's belief that health care is a right, not a privilege. We were inspired to hear how #TitleX funding supports their capacity to ensure that patients living in this rural region receive the contraceptive method that is right for them, supporting their individual and ohana health, and the piece of mind that access to essential health care brings. Mahalo to the amazing team at Ko'olauloa, you are super stars in your community!”
