Yearly Physicals

Aloha ‘Ohana!

When you hear the word “physical,” you may think of 'hanabata' days when you had to visit the doctor to get shots for school. But a physical is more than just shots or a physical exam. And both children AND adults can benefit from attending regular physicals.

You may feel fine, but catching problems BEFORE they become serious means: Finding a problem when it is easier to treat (such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer). Saving you money, and potentially saving your life.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org/yearly-physicals to learn more or schedule an appointment.

Keiki Dental

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Did you know that the American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1?

The sooner children begin getting regular dental checkups, the healthier their mouths will stay throughout their lives. Early checkups help prevent cavities and tooth decay, which can lead to pain, trouble concentrating, and other medical issues. Youngsters with healthy teeth chew food easily, learn to speak clearly, and smile with confidence.

The American Dental Association says that every child should visit a dentist by age 1 – or as soon as the first tooth appears. This “well-baby visit” teaches parents and caregivers how to care for their children’s teeth and help them remain cavity-free.

Community Healthcare

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Did you know that we believe a community's health isn't just measured by access to medical care? It’s true. We believe that physical and mental health are critical elements for improving social well-being. Vibrant public spaces are essential community resources where people come together to play, learn, grow food, exercise, and relax.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we work with local, public, and private partners to address those needs to improve community health outcomes within the Ko’olauloa area by improving opportunities for physical activity; increasing access to nutritious and affordable food; promoting public safety; and offering high-quality health care services.

Welcome Cecilia Serrato DMD!

Aloha ‘Ohana!

We would like to welcome Cecilia Serrato, DMD to our Ko’olauloa Health Center family.

Cecilia grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah where she completed a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies, with a minor in Pediatric Clinical Research, both from the University of Utah.

She then attended dental school at Roseman University of Health Science where her passion grew deeper for the blend of art and science found in dentistry. During her training at Roseman University of Health Sciences, she trained as a general dentist in diagnostic, preventive, and operative dentistry, as well as pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery.

Cecilia’s inspiration to become a dentist came after she had her mouth rehabbed as a young adult. The lack of access to dental care in her childhood led to the need for significant dental work. The rehabilitation of Cecilia’s mouth had an incredibly positive effect on her life, and from that moment on she wanted to be able to make the same difference for others.

Cecilia’s goal is to provide high-quality, compassionate, and caring dental treatment, based on a patient-centered care approach that will empower patients to maintain good oral health. “I have trained to provide a comprehensive range of dental services and look forward to providing complete care for pediatric and adult patients and preventing unnecessary dental pain”.

Besides Cecilia’s passion for dentistry, she is passionate about spending time with her family and two dogs, Aurora and Mila. Cecilia also enjoys hikes, gardening, and trying new foods. “I am beyond excited to be in Hawaii and look forward to learning and trying new things”.

Welcome to the KHC family Cecilia!

Aloha Spirit July 2023

Aloha Spirit ~ July 2023

Our staff at Ko’olauloa believes that Aloha Spirit is the coordination of the minds and hearts within each of us. It brings each person to the self. It allows each person to think and emote good feelings toward others.

In the contemplation and presence of the life force, "Aloha", the following unuhi laulā loa may be thought of in this way:

"Akahai", meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness;

"Lōkahi", means unity, to be expressed with harmony;

"ʻOluʻolu" means agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness;

"Haʻahaʻa", means humility, to be expressed with modesty;

"Ahonui", meaning patience, is to be expressed with perseverance.

All of us at KHC believe these are traits of character that express the charm, warmth, and sincerity of our community. We all look forward to serving you. Visit us at www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 to learn more about our services.

Mahalo Naty!

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Ko’olauloa Health Center is announcing the retirement of Nativad “Naty” Camit Hopewell, beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and provider of this community.

Originally born in the Philippines and raised in Kahuku, Oahu, Naty has been serving the Ko’olauloa community since 2002. She began her career at Ko’olauloa Health Center in November 2004 as an advocate for the initial funding to start the health center itself. Her husband, Mike Hopewell, and herself volunteered as the CFO and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to help get the health center off its feet. In addition to being a medical provider at Ko’olauloa Health Center, Naty also held other positions including, but not limited to, Outreach Supervisor, Quality Improvement Officer, and Medical Director. She could do anything from helping you find the help that you needed to providing and getting the care that her patients deserved. Naty was very passionate and cared for the well-being of her patients whether they were her own patients or someone that just walked in and needed care.

When she’s not serving her community as a medical provider, Naty likes to tend to her garden, is a member of her church choir, and a ukulele student. She also belongs to the Bromeliad Society, is a trained artist, and is an author of multiple health-related articles.

She will be truly missed here at Ko’olauloa Health Center. We wish her the best in retirement and hope that she continues to travel and see the world as the avid, worldly traveler that she is.
P.S. Don’t worry, we still have other providers to see you!

Words Matter

Aloha ‘Ohana - we hope everyone is safe on this beautiful Sunday. While we were getting ready for the week and the new year, we were thinking of our community’s keiki and how we can continue to be a positive influence.

Going back to basics - Words Matter…

Certainly, words can become meaningless when they aren’t followed with action, but nonetheless, words have great power. You can choose to add more positive ones to your days.

What phrases do you say each day to your children?
Which ones do you want them to remember?
What do you say that will stay with your children for the rest of their lives?

Coming up with a few encouraging words for kids or positive phrases to say may tip the scales toward the kindness you want your keiki to imitate.

Here is an abbreviated list of things to say to your children that may inspire you*

- You are loved
- You make me smile
- I think about you when we’re apart
- My world is better with you in it
- I will do my best to keep you safe
- Sometimes I will say no
- I have faith in you
- I know you can handle it
- You are creative
- Trust your instincts
- Your ideas are worthwhile
- You are capable
- You are deserving
- You are strong

The complete list will appear in the News section of our new website which will be launching very soon!
