Did you know that we believe a community’s health isn’t just measured by access to medical care? It’s true. We believe that physical and mental health are critical elements for improving social well-being. Vibrant public spaces are essential community resources where people come together to play, learn, grow food, exercise, and relax.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we work with local, public, and private partners to address those needs to improve community health outcomes within the Ko’olauloa area by improving opportunities for physical activity; increasing access to nutritious and affordable food; promoting public safety; and offering high-quality health care services.

4-7-8 Breathing

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Here is a simple wellness tip from our staff.

When everyday stress hits, try 4-7-8 breathing. Breathing is an essential act that requires no thought. But thinking about it can alter your physical and mental health. It can relieve stress and anxiety or help you wind down and fall asleep. Here’s how to do it:

1. Inhale through your notes for four counts.
2. Then hold that breath for seven counts.
3. Then exhale through your mouth (slowly) for eight counts.

KHC Outreach

Aloha ‘Ohana!

The other week Ko'olauloa Health Center staff led a free health assessment for Hau'ula Elementary staff members. Medical assistants conducted screening for weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Medical providers then reviewed results with each staff member and completed a diabetes risk assessment if needed. Those who qualified were invited to sign up for our CDC Diabetes Prevention Program. Finally a front office staff member was on hand to answer any insurance related questions.

BP Awareness

Aloha ‘Ohana!

May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month. Here are a few simple points on understanding your blood pressure.

What is blood pressure?: Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps it around your body.

Understanding the numbers: Blood pressure readings consist of two numbers - systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number). Systolic measures pressure when the heart beats, while diastolic measures pressure when the heart rests between beats.

Interpreting readings: Normal blood pressure is typically around 120/80 mmHg. Readings above this may indicate hypertension (high blood pressure), while readings below may indicate hypotension (low blood pressure). It’s important to understand where your readings fall.

Risk factors and lifestyle: Various factors such as diet, exercise, stress, and genetics can influence blood pressure. Understanding these factors and making appropriate lifestyle changes can help manage and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare professional are crucial.

If you have any questions about your blood pressure or heart health, give us a call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org.

Self-Care

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Here is a great message from our friends at the Hawaii Department of Health:

Devoting some time every day to care for yourself can go a long way toward protecting your heart health. Self-care, like moving more, preparing healthier meals, getting enough quality sleep, and taking a moment to de-stress, helps your heart.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org to make an appointment to learn more about taking care of yourself or scheduling your annual physical.

Women's Health

Aloha ‘Ohana,

Here is an important statistic to keep in mind: did you know that over 1,000 women in Hawaii are diagnosed with breast cancer annually? It is the second most deadly cancer for women after lung cancer. Death rates are highest for Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders. Early detection and treatment are key.

Know the warning signs:

- New lump in your breast or armpit
- Any swelling or thickening of your breast
- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
- Redness or flaky skin on your breast
- Pain or pulling in of your nipple
- Nipple discharge (other than milk!)
- Change in size or shape of your breast
- Pain in any part of your breast

Self-checks and getting to a doctor right away can save your life.

Call us at 293-9231 for an appointment.

Annual Physicals

Aloha ‘Ohana!

When you hear the word “physical,” you may think of ‘hanabata’ days when you had to visit the doctor to get shots for school. But a physical is more than just shots or a physical exam. And both children AND adults can benefit from attending regular physicals.

You may feel fine, but catching problems BEFORE they become serious means: Finding a problem when it is easier to treat (such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer). Saving you money, and potentially saving your life.

Call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org/yearly-physicals to learn more or schedule an appointment.

KHC Services

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Our friendly pharmacy team is ready to serve all North Shore customers. Even if you are not a patient with us, you are still able to fill prescriptions at Ko’olauloa Health Center.

Unlike most retail pharmacies, Ko’olauloa Health Center makes medications affordable with a sliding scale for uninsured patients.

Ko’olauloa Health Center’s free consultation services by our friendly pharmacist include medication reconciliation — discussing each individual medication, what it is used for (indication), instructions for administration, how it works within the body, anticipated side effects, and most importantly, possible interactions with other medications you might already be taking.

Ko’olauloa Pharmacy also offers their patients: shorter wait times for medications; one-stop convenience with the pharmacy co-located at Ko’olauloa Health Center’s Kahuku Clinic right next to the hospital; complimentary pill organizers and pill cutters; and of course personalized friendly service because at KHC you’re ‘ohana.

Ko’olauloa Health Center’s providers and pharmacists work as a team to keep you and your family well! If you live in Laie or Kahuku, come fill your next prescription with one of Ko’olauloa Health Center’s providers.
