4-7-8 Breathing

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Here is a simple wellness tip from our staff.

When everyday stress hits, try 4-7-8 breathing. Breathing is an essential act that requires no thought. But thinking about it can alter your physical and mental health. It can relieve stress and anxiety or help you wind down and fall asleep. Here’s how to do it:

1. Inhale through your notes for four counts.
2. Then hold that breath for seven counts.
3. Then exhale through your mouth (slowly) for eight counts.

National Library Week

Aloha ‘Ohana!

This week is National Library Week. Did you know reading to children supports health and wellness?

Even though babies can’t understand everything you’re saying let alone read words, reading aloud is key to brain development needed for math, reading, and even emotional control. Because it’s social time, it’s a time for you to get closer to your baby.

Try to read out loud to your baby every day; before naps and bedtime are ideal. Have them snuggle in your lap when you’re reading to them. Read with enthusiasm. Vary the tone of your voice. You’re not limited to the words on the page. Ask questions. What’s going to happen next? Etc.

At Ko’olauloa Health Center we believe reading is so vital for wellness, that we have a program called Reach Out and Read. Each time your child comes for their visit between the ages of 6 months and 6 years, will receive a new book to add to their personal library. Speaking of libraries. If you don’t have a public library card, go get one! Picking out books with your child will build a lifetime of love for reading.

Concerned about your child’s reading or speaking? Let your primary care provider know. We can usually tell you if they’re on track or not, and if we have any doubts, we can refer your child to the right specialist to figure out the issue and get the needed treatment.

Keiki and adults alike need to stay on schedule for regular wellness visits. Call us today for an appointment. We are always accepting new patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

Visit www.koolauloachc.org or call (808) 293-9231 for more information.

Know Your BP

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Here are a few simple points on understanding your blood pressure.

What is blood pressure?: Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps it around your body.

Understanding the numbers: Blood pressure readings consist of two numbers - systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number). Systolic measures pressure when the heart beats, while diastolic measures pressure when the heart rests between beats.

Interpreting readings: Normal blood pressure is typically around 120/80 mmHg. Readings above this may indicate hypertension (high blood pressure), while readings below may indicate hypotension (low blood pressure). It’s important to understand where your readings fall.

Risk factors and lifestyle: Various factors such as diet, exercise, stress, and genetics can influence blood pressure. Understanding these factors and making appropriate lifestyle changes can help manage and maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Regular monitoring and consultation with a healthcare professional are crucial.

If you have any questions about your blood pressure or heart health, give us a call (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org.

NPHW : Hear Her Initiative

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Today we’re lifting up the Hear Her initiative during National Public Health Week.

Did you know that in 2020, the CDC launched the Hear Her® campaign to raise awareness of warning signs for pregnancy-related complications and encourage better communication between pregnant people and their healthcare providers? The campaign has developed informational posters and handouts in nearly 20 languages and features videos of women sharing their personal pregnancy stories and how they got help. Hear Her® encourages all people to listen to pregnant women when they say something doesn’t feel right, because acting quickly can save a life. More than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States can be prevented, yet over 700 women still die each

year as a result of pregnancy complications.

If you are pregnant and have and questions or concerns, please call us to speak to our OB-GYN at (808) 293-9231 or visit www.koolauloachc.org.

Aloha ‘Ohana!

Today we’re focusing on “The Heart Truth” as part of National Public Health Week. Did you know that In 2002, The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) created The Heart Truth® campaign, designed to raise awareness about heart disease as the leading cause of death in women. The campaign originally focused on women aged 40‒60, with an emphasis on reaching women of color. It has since expanded awareness efforts to educate younger women on the benefits of a heart-healthy lifestyle. In 2003, the campaign introduced the Red Dress® as the national symbol for women and heart disease, and the campaign holds special events throughout American Heart Month each February to help raise awareness.

You can learn more about The Heart Truth and its program initiatives here: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/education/heart-truth/about

In the mean time here are a few simple things you can do starting today to keep your hearth healthy.
